Slaytober DIY Halloween Costume: How to Make a Mermaid Costume

It’s October #WwBSlaytober and halloween is right around the corner!

A good halloween themed party or bar crawl demands a super fun costume.

Why not create that costume yourself, babes?

October is the perfect time to do DIY projects like creating your own Halloween costume.

Occasionally, I enjoy a good DIY project. I’m not super crafty, but I like to get creative and make something I can actually use.

Not to mention, I love Kim K’s fashion and style, so when I saw her 2012 mermaid costume, it truly inspired me to create my own!

Keep reading to learn how you too can DIY and make your own mermaid costume!

Here’s what you will need to make this DIY mermaid costume:

Get creative, babes and really make this costume your own!

One of the many things that I love about this DIY costume is that there’s a good amount of creative freedom with being a beautiful mermaid!

This costume can be ANY color you want.

I used green, but again you can use any color. I also love pink of course! If you wanna be extra fancy I’d recommend trying a cool fabric like this one. It’s sequence and the color changes if you want. It’s pretty shiny and glamorous if you ask me!

The shells and spray paint provide another opportunity to get creative and really have some fun with this DIY halloween costume!

How to create this DIY mermaid costume:

Skirt

  1. Using the Scale Mermaid like fabric measure out enough so that you’re able to wrap the entire fabric around your lower body at least once. It’s great to use the tape measurement for this or you can eye ball it/try wrapping some fabric around you before requesting how much of it is cut.

  2. Once you’re sure that the skirt is long enough and wraps fully around your waist, you then want to add the elastic band to the skirt. Place the elastic band at the top of the skirt on the inside of the fabric. Once the band is laid out to line the top of the skirt, fold the fabric over the band as if to cover it. Use the double sided fabric tape to neatly secure the fabric so that it covers the elastic band and is no longer open.

  3. Next, close the skirt up by folding it long ways. You’ll want to once again use the double sided fabric tape to close the fabric. I suggest leaving a long slit along the side so that you’re costume is easy to walk in. This also makes it a bit sexy depending on how long the slit is.

  4. Finally, add shiny tulle (comes in various colors) to the bottom of the skirt. I used two different colors to create a pretty ombre look. The glue gun was used to secure the shiny tulle to the bottom of the skirt. Each time I used one color of shiny tulle I’d then layer with the next color. I also scrunched up the shiny tulle so that the two colors truly did look layered. If you’re doing a green or blue costume, I’d recommend those two colors for the shiny tulle. If you’re doing pink or purple then use those two colors.

Let’s talk about how I created this DIY mermaid bra costume.

It was really important to me that my boobs fit well in the costume, so I actually used one of my FAVORITE Victoria Secret bras, babes! Does anyone remember the ? I’ll always miss it.

Anyways, here is how you create this mermaid bra:

  1. First use the Spray paint ( I love this shade of gold called 18K) to fully cover the bra of choice (more coverage bra or less coverage bra ).

  2. Next, use the glue gun to secure sea shells and a few pieces of seaweed like fabric (optional) to the bra. I chose to also spray paint the seaweed like fabric, but depending on what you get it may not be necessary.

  3. Finally, I cut a costume pearl necklace in half and then tiered the strings of peals under each side of the bra. You could also wear the costume pearl necklace as an actual necklace like Kim K does above. I’d do both!

Remember to keep extra fun with optional accessories like an ombre wig or a sea shell headband !
