Come with me to Puerto Rico as I share my healthy morning routine while on vacation.
Morning routines while traveling or on vacation offer a beautiful opportunity to pour into yourself and maintain your wellbeing while typically in gorgeous environments.
Environmental wellness is one of the dimensions of wellness. Completing your morning routine for wellness in a place that makes you happy is an additional way to optimize your health and wellness.
Do you have a morning routine? If so share your morning routine list in the comments below.
I love using the mornings to complete my wellness practices and prioritize self care.
How do I keep a traveling routine? I keep a healthy traveling routine by having a good morning routine and planning ahead.
While on a trip or vacation I love to maintain my wellness and self care by having a morning routine and by identifying local opportunities like healthy restaurants or activities. In addition to identifying local opportunities, you could also plan ahead by bringing items that will support your wellbeing while traveling.
I’d actually say that my morning routine is one of my favorite activities when traveling and on vacation.
Doing my morning routine while on vacation is a personal favorite because you get to pour into yourself while also experiencing the local environment which can be a fun way to change up your wellness routine. You don’t have to do new activities, but just being in beautiful vacation environments like a hotel or resort will feel luxurious.
I especially love to find beaches, pools, or other outdoor locations when I complete my morning routine while on vacation. This is because I love the water. If you can get outdoors then that has wellness benefits too!
Morning routine Ideas
What is an example of a morning routine? What are some ideas for my morning routine checklist?
I’m sharing what I enjoy during my morning routine as an example. You should definitely create your own and try out different activities to see what you prefer.
Not sure where to start? Think about your wellness and self care needs. Use that as inspiration for morning routine ideas.
Below are the wellness activities I did while on vacation in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Most days I headed out around 6 am with my yoga mat, journal, and bikini to complete my morning routine on the beach. I know 6 am sounds early but I naturally wake up early and am not a fan of alarm clocks.
I’ve started to embrace the early wake up time because it actually comes with quite a few benefits, including privacy which I talk more about below. I also love my early morning routine because it allows me to have more time in the day. This includes the option to rest or take it easy before the day’s schedule begins.
Grounding
Are you familiar with the wellness practice called grounding? Grounding is typically practiced outdoors and is a wonderful way to connect with nature.
Each morning I’d walk out to the beach and right before stepping onto the sand, I’d take my shoes off so I could feel the sand. After setting up my items aka claiming my special spot on the beach, I’d then slowly walk barefoot around the beach, usually from my spot to the ocean, feeling the waves and then returning.
Yoga
I’m a registered yoga teacher and love using yoga as a way to get moving. It’s also a form of meditation. Practicing yoga in the morning helps me get clarity, increases my energy, and helps reduce any feelings of anxiety I may be having.
Meditation
There are so many different ways to meditate. If you’re new to meditation or looking to switch up your practice, I’d definitely recommend exploring different ways to meditate so you can find what resonates most with you.
I meditate in the morning because it brings more clarity to my day. Meditating reduces anxiety for me too, which is a huge benefit. By prioritizing it in the morning I’m also guaranteed to consistently get it done.
Journaling
Do you journal or write?
You can journal about pretty much anything. By writing down my thoughts, desires, gratitude, or even a to-do list, I’m bringing clarity to my day.
Journaling is a great way to set your intentions for the day and provide opportunities for self-reflection.
Relax and Enjoy
After completing my morning routine I would then relax on the beach and enjoy the water, sun, and scenery.
Soooo that was my morning routine while in San Juan, Puerto Rico!
This is very similar to my typical morning routine while at home. I always do what feels good in that moment and skip what doesn’t feel like it aligns, especially while on vacation. This means skipping my entire morning routine if that’s what feels good. Sometimes the health and wellness we need is good sleep or rest. Rest is productive!
Ideas for Morning Routines While On Vacation
Are you looking for ways to maintain healthy habits while on vacation? Or maybe you want to practice self care while away traveling?
Here are some tips for how to create your morning routine while on vacation or traveling:
Location & Scenery
I love doing my morning routine while on vacation because the scenary is MAJOR VIBES!
Typically while on vacation you have the convenience of visiting a beautiful beach, hotel areas, or other environments that look and feel amazing.
Environmental wellness is one of the dimensions of wellness.
Our environment influences our choices and how we feel. By prioritizing your self care routines and wellness practices in a space that makes you happy, you are increasing the benefits of the experience or activity.
Also, if you’re able to get outdoors for your morning routine then know that there are many health and wellness benefits of immersing yourself in nature. It’s like a bonus or way to further enhance your currently healthy habits and self care routine if you can do it outdoors!
Timing
I’d suggest a simple morning routine that feels fulfilling based on your wellness goals and desires.
Allow enough time to comfortably complete your morning routines and fully poor into yourself. This is a vacation, so consider keeping your morning routine short.
Overall be realistic about the time you have to allocate to your routine and the time you need to feel fulfilled.
This is not about being hard on yourself and forcing yourself to stick to routines. Instead aim for maintaining healthy habits by doing what feels good and preparing by having options that support healthy habits.
Privacy
Having privacy during your morning routine can help strengthen your connection to self and allow you to be comfortable fully showing up with out the fear of people watching you.
I’m a certified yoga instructor and love the intimacy of doing yoga alone when it’s for my own practice.
Having people around could be a distraction even if you don’t mind them watching. People may make noises that are distracting or may try to engage you in a conversation. External distractions are especially annoying when journaling or meditating.
BONUS Solution: I’ve found that TWO things really help me guarantee privacy…
Going really early in the morning (or as early as possible based on when you wake up)
Choosing areas that are a bit exclusive like a pool where people wouldn’t come until later or a hotel balcony that is overlooking the land or in our case, the beach.
In some cases, I’ve even chosen fitness rooms at times when others wouldn’t be around, but standard fitness rooms are honestly the least exciting location to choose while on vacation. I’d only recommend them if you need the equipment, genuinely prefer it, or it’s the only space large/private enough for your activities.
In Puerto Rico, I walked to the beach each morning and it took less than 5 minutes.
I don’t always have the luxury of a beach being so close while on vacation. This is when balconies or pools can be helpful! I love love love a beautiful balcony view while traveling or on vacation
